Public Sector Equality Duty

Chowbent is alert to the needs to advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it

Advancing equality of opportunity involves, in particular:-

(a) removing or minimising disadvantages suffered by people which are connected to a particular characteristic they have (for example disabled pupils, or gay pupils who are being subjected to homophobic bullying, those who have a SEND disability)

(b) taking steps to meet the particular needs of people who have a particular characteristic (for example enabling muslim pupils to pray at prescribed times, or the beliefs and practices of Jehovah Witnesses).

(c) encouraging people who have a particular characteristic to participate fully in any activities (for example encouraging both boys and girls, and pupils from different ethnic backgrounds, to be involved in the full range of school societies).

Our current focus is to –

  • to narrow the gap in performance of disabled SEND pupils.
  • to increase understanding between religious groups.
  • to reduce the number of racist incidents.
  • to raise the levels of school attendance for pupils who have SEND or / and are classed as disadvantaged.
  • to encourage girls to consider non-stereotyped career options through a curriculum that relates to historical figures of both genders, especially in STEM.
